That list is only a slice of everyday English — the finder above searches the full 5-letter set, thousands of words deep, so combinations far beyond this list are one search away.

How the finder works

1

Starts with

Fix the opening. One letter gives you a whole family; two or three letters narrow it to a shortlist. Knowing a word starts ST and ends E already skips most of the dictionary.

2

Ends with

Endings are powerful in word games: a word ending in E, S, D or Y fits hooks and crossword slots that most words can't. Combine an ending with a start and the list shrinks fast.

3

Must contain

The letters you know are in there somewhere — a confirmed Wordle yellow, a vowel you haven't placed, a Q that needs its U. Type the letter twice if the word must contain it twice.

Playing Wordle specifically? The Wordle solver goes one step further: it tracks green positions exactly and remembers that a yellow letter can't sit where you guessed it. Starting a fresh game? These starting words cover the most common letters first.

Frequently asked questions

How many 5-letter words are there?

Thousands. English has far more 5-letter words than most players expect once you count plurals, verb forms and less common words. WordScout's finder searches the 5-letter words inside a large English list of more than 370,000 words, and the filters on this page narrow that set down in seconds.

How do I find 5-letter words that start with certain letters?

Type the opening letters into the "Starts with" box — one letter, two, or as many as you know — and press Find. You can combine it with "Ends with" and "Must contain" to narrow the list further, for example words starting with ST, ending in E and containing an A.

What are the most common 5-letter words?

Words like about, other, which, there, their, would, first, these, world and being show up constantly in everyday English. The list on this page collects hundreds of the most useful ones — a good set to learn for word games, because common words come up far more often than obscure ones.

Can I use this finder for Wordle and Scrabble?

Yes. For Wordle, set the letters you've confirmed and the finder shows every word still possible — or use the dedicated Wordle solver, which also tracks where yellow letters cannot go. For Scrabble and Words With Friends, the starts-with, ends-with and contains filters help you find plays that fit the hooks already on the board. Always treat your game's own dictionary as the final judge.

Is the 5-letter word finder free?

Yes, completely free — no account, no sign-up, no limits. The word list loads once and searches run instantly in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
